This year we will have a new communication tool, we will be using Discord as an informal discussion forum, marketplace, tool for coordination. (The club calendar and website will remain the most current and authoritative source of information though.)
Discord has better functionality and will be a replacement both for our TGIF Whatsapp group and for the (now defunct) web forum.
Here are the steps to get access to Discord.

  1. Download Discord through your phone’s app store, or visit https://discord.com/ to use it in your browser or download the desktop version. (Skip if you already use it–many people already do).
  2. Create a username (skip if you’ve already done this). Many people like to create a username that does not include their real name, for use on Discord in non PCYC discussions.
  3. Email your name and username, using the email you use for club communications, to our Fleet Captain Frank Ferrara (see below), or to the office.
  4. Frank will add you to the Discord server and you will receive an invite.
  5. Once you’ve joined the PCYC server, please choose a Server Profile name that clearly identifies you – at a minimum, include your full first name. We’re an open yachting community that values transparency, and we want to know who we’re talking to when someone posts. Anonymity is discouraged.

🧭 Welcome to Discord — What You Need to Know

Thanks for joining our PCYC Discord server! If you’re used to WhatsApp or Messenger, here’s a quick guide to how Discord is different — and better for clubs like ours:

💬 1. Organized Conversations with “Channels”

Instead of one big chat, Discord uses channels to keep topics separate.
Think of them like rooms. These are the text channels we have created for our members:

  • #clubhouse-lounge
  • #racing
  • #TGIF-friday-racing
  • #crew-finder
  • #marketplace
  • #cruising
  • #gallery
  • #all-about-boat-care

No more losing important info in a sea of messages!

🔔 2. You Control What You See

  • Each channel can be customized
  • You can mute individual channels you don’t want to follow
  • Turn notifications on or off for each topic
  • Helps reduce noise and lets you focus on what matters to you

🎙️ 3. Voice

  • You can hold voice chats right in the app
  • You’ll see members “in” the room and can pop in
  • Our voice channel is: the-patio
